Sickness Update

So here's my update:
On Friday I sent a letter home with the parents asking them to keep their kids home if they had any of the following... then I listed all the "sick" symptoms I wouldn't accept. I also talked for quite a while with one of the parents about the situation. He told me his daughter always has a runny nose (very often yellow and green) and his son always has diarrhea. I admit upfront that I don't know everything about kids and their health, but I told him from my experiences in daycare and as a parent, as far as I know, that is not "normal" and maybe we should be open to making some adjustments (diet, etc.) to see if the symptoms would clear up.

Many of you wrote comments about allergies. Let me be clear that seasonal allergies is not what we are dealing with here. I'm pretty sure the other one I watch has seasonal allergies and that's why her nose is often clear runny.

The kids went to the doctor a few days ago, and we are now testing out the possibility of a lactose intolerance for the diarrhea and the little girl is on an antibiotic for the yellow and green drippage. Today is their first day back, and I have to say that so far they both seem to be feeling much better. I haven't wiped a single runny nose yet! Time will tell of course, but I'm hopeful!

Diarrhea is NOT normal. I'm glad to hear the parents are doing something about it. And, gross snot sounds like it could even be a sinus issue. That's good that you were proactive with your letter home. I made up a "contract" before starting babysitting and outlined what was ok and not ok. I was even specific on being late, payment, emergencies, etc. I could send you a copy if you'd like to see it. I wanted it signed before I took their kids. I don't want to bring up issues in the moment. It's too uncomfortable (especially payment). So far so good. I also insist on email. Sometimes it's easier to email than talk upfront. I do it when necessary, of course, but email allows each of us to chat when we can during the day and I can remind parents about needing diapers, etc. without wasting time when drop offs pickups happen.
